Dungeon Master's Glossary

A

Alacar Isle
A mysterious island resting in the center of Lake Alacar. Legends tell competing stories of what rests upon the island, cursed horrors, or riches beyond measure. The only thing that can be sure is that those who venture there rarely return. Typically the isle is shrouded in mists and fog, but on a clear day, some sort of ancient ruins may be seen from the lake shore.

Alacar, Lake
A body of water south of the Torrun Road. Few venture out upon the lake, which is regularly covered in mist and fog. Some old fishermen’s tales spin yarns of sirens, water witches, and other mystic dangers that reside within the water’s depths. Despite being a prime spot for fishing, there are very few settlements near the lake, likely due to the reputation that rumors and weather has built. The Stonemouth River empties into the lake from the east. The Seaward River flows out to the ocean from the northwestern corner of the lake.

Androth; Dread Lord.
Sorcerer? Demon? Avatar of a God of War? No one truly knows Androth’s origins or the source of his power. Despite this, Androth left an unmistakable legacy through his reign of terror which nearly destroyed the realm, and ultimately united it against him. Centuries following his defeat and death at the Battle of Cloudtop, a cult of the Dread Lord’s devotees persists and is currently active within the Freevale.
Anvil, Mt.
A large, solitary mountain in the Outlands region, it is so named for its flattened peak. Historically, it was the site of many successful mining operations, until the veins of ore and precious metals dried up. Local legends tell of a mysterious curse that led to the abandonment of the mountain, and that the ghosts of miners past haunt its multitude of tunnels and shafts. In the decades since, smaller mining sites have spread out throughout the plains and hills of the Outlands.
Avanathus; Councilman
A nobleman residing within Perdigrad’s Cultural District, Avanathus serves upon the city’s council. While he is a man of moral fiber and wants to do what is right for Perdigrad’s many residents, he and the other council members are effectively controlled through fear of repercussion by the city’s Ordinator.

The temple’s Houses of Healing take in any who are sick or in need of aid, and provide care without judgment. Once trainee healers have mastered the restorative arts, they leave to travel the Freevale and provide healing in other far-off locations. The temple is also responsible for the printing and illumination of copies of the Book of Balmera, which are distributed across the Freevale by travelling priestesses.

Bridgetown
Started by individuals who could not gain access to the city of Perdigrad, this shanty town has grown to all but completely cover the bridge that connects Capital Isle with the mainland. All space on both sides of the bridge has been occupied by wooden dwellings, market stalls, bars, and other buildings that have been cobbled together over time. At the end of the bridge lies the Declaration Gate, which is run by the Perdigrad Customs Office. Customs officials regulate trade and trafficking of illicit goods, but they also reinforce the division between the bridge and the city, keeping “undesirables” on the outside. They are also not immune to corruption, using or partnering with the Bridgetown merchants to enrich themselves and set the inhabitants against each other.

Absent the burden of kings and kingdoms, the Freevale was born from the fall of several nations that once divided the land in an age long past. These nations fell victim to Androth’s campaign of terror, but when he was defeated, the old power structures did not return. Instead, the remaining city-states, no-longer under the control of monarchs, would provide the necessary law and order that the realm required. The system has worked, and since then there have been very few major conflicts, and nothing to compare with the scale of Androth’s rampage of destruction. The region that makes up the Freevale is isolated from the rest of the world, due to mountain ranges on three sides of its borders, and the open ocean on the other. While there is no specific central authority in the Freevale, some semblance of control is typically gained through trade. The biggest players would be the city-states of Perdigrad and Melandis, as well as the Torrun Trading Consortium.

In the modern age, this land is sparsely populated with a few fishing communities and hideaway coves for pirates.

The Order values knowledge and peace; as such they have a vast library within their monastery, which also serves as a self-sustaining farm. The monks are not strangers to a fight, however. Like their namesake, they will take up arms if there is no other option. As part of their induction into the Order, monks undergo rigorous training in the blade, the bow, and the quarterstaff. As centuries passed, the Order also secretly spawned a more militant ancillary sect that employed mages, rangers, and spies. This part of the Order was purposed with maintaining a more active role in subtly guiding the Freevale toward peace.

The success of the dwarves’ merchant traders has made them very rich, and as such, they hold considerable influence within the Freevale’s political arena.
